Purpose of the Classification

Statistical Domains:
2.4.5 Tourism
Purpose:
The purpose is to group as tourism activities, those activities from the spectrum of ISIC that typically produce the products purchased by visitors. This is fundamental for setting up a Tourism Satellite Account (TSA). Please refer to IRTS 2008, para. 5.11.
Main Applications:
Categorize the tourism characteristic activities (tourism industries) in a standard way that allows for international comparability. This is fundamental for drawing up a Tourism Satellite Account. Support policy, decision making and analysis.
Main Users:
Public sector (in particular National Statistical Office and National Tourism Administration), private sector and academia

Methodology

Scope:
Productive activities serving visitors.
Concept Being Classified:
economic activities, tourism, tourism industries
Statistical Units:
establishment
Main Principles:
Tourism characteristic activities are the activities that typically produce tourism characteristic products. As the industrial origin of a product (the ISIC industry that produces it) is not a criterion for the aggregation of products within a similar CPC category, there is no strict one-to-one relationship between products and the industries producing them as their principal outputs. Two products of similar characteristics but produced by two different ISIC industries would be classified in the same CPC category (see para. 5.11 IRTS 2008).

1993 RTS
2008
IRTS 2008
Official Adopting Entity:
UN Statistical Commission
Coordinating Entity:
World Tourism Organization
Reason for Latest Revision:
The 1993 RTS proposed the Standard International Classification of Tourism Activities (SICTA) which was approved as a provisional classification (IRTS 2008 para. 1.19)
Major Changes:
See IRTS 2008 Annex 1 - Main differences between the IRTS 2008 and the 1993 RTS. 1993 RTS: No product classification. SICTA for activities, defined from ISIC using a subclassification from the 4-digit ISIC, (Rev. 3). Loose relationship with the consumption by visitors. IRTS 2008: Tourism characteristic and tourism connected products are defined in terms of the 5-digit CPC, (Vev. 2) category to which they belong; goods can be included; strict relationship with acquisition by visitors. Establishments whose principal output is tourism characteristic (tourism industries) are defined on the basis of the 4-digit ISIC (Rev. 4) category to which they belong; no production of goods is included, only their retail trade as tourism industries must directly serve visitors.
