Statistical Classifications
The Classifications website of UNSD has been upgraded to the new modern format of UNSD web pages. The new format is designed to make access to the site easier for mobile devices and deliver a better experience in navigating the content of the overall UNSD website.
The content of the Classifications website has been rearranged and focuses on official outputs of UNSD in the area of classifications, while also better integrating it with other professionally maintained components of the UNSD website. Previous unofficial outputs, like correspondence tables, are currently not supported.
Statistical classifications are a key requirement for the production of reliable, comparable and methodologically sound statistics. The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) is the custodian of several international standard classifications that are being maintained and updated to ensure their applicability to current economic, social, environemnt and other phenomeno that are being measured in international statistics. The international classifications are being used by virtually every country in the world as the basis for their own national classifications.
UNSD is involved in several aspects of international work on statistical classifications.

International coordination
The Expert Group on International Statistical Classifications coordinates the international work on the development and maintanance of classifications in all fields of statistcal work. UNSD serves as the Secretariat of the Expert Group. The overall scope of statistical classifications is represented in the International Family of Statistical Classifications.

International statistical classifications are used in many countries as the basis for their national classifications or used directly. UNSD maintains information on the actual use of classifications aoud the world.

Meetings
UNSD acts as the Secretariat of the Expert Group on International Statistical Classifications and hosts the coordination and working meetigs of the Expert group and its Technical Subgroups. In the past, UNSD also carried out technical workshops on classifications around the world.
