The United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) supports the national and international standardization of geographical names. Through its sessions, divisions, working groups, technical resources and collaborative activities, UNGEGN assists Member States in strengthening national names authorities, promoting the use of standardized geographical names, supporting multilingual and culturally informed naming practices, and improving the availability and use of authoritative geographical names information.
UNGEGN’s work connects geography, language, culture, history, cartography, statistics and geospatial information. Standardized geographical names support clear communication, effective administration, sustainable development, emergency response, cultural heritage, data integration and international cooperation.
