Purpose of the Classification

Statistical Domains:
2.2 Economic accounts, 2.6 International trade and balance of payments
Purpose:
The purpose of the classification is to analyze international trade statistics by large economic classes of goods and services, based on the main outputs of corresponding industries, to facilitate broad analyses of trade and production. Furthermore, it can be used to identify SNA end-use dimensions (intermediate consumption, gross fixed capital formation, final consumption). The specification dimension is added to differentiate intermediates that are generic, i.e. consumed across a wide range of industries, from those that are specified, i.e. typically consumed only in certain industries.
Main Applications:
Identification of the end-use of traded products
Main Users:
Policy makers, Economists, trade analysts, general public

Methodology

Major Differences (Scope, Structure, and Concepts):
HS only covers the goods. BEC, Rev 5, is an analytical classification of which the categories can be derived from HS (for goods), and CPC (for services). BEC is considered as an alternative analytical breakdown with dimensions of end-use, processing, specification and durability.
BEC Rev. 5 - CPC V2.1
BEC, Rev 5, is an analytical classification of which the categories can be derived from HS (for goods), and CPC (for services). The BEC Rev. 5 covers all basic classes of the Central Product Classification (CPC) and can be seen as a specific re-arrangement of them. The overall breakdown between goods and services in BEC should coincide with the overall breakdown of goods and services in the CPC. BEC is considered as an alternative analytical breakdown with dimensions of end-use, processing, specification and durability.
