Purpose of the Classification

Statistical Domains:
3.1 Environment
Purpose:
To enable countries to report their national inventories of anthropogenic emissions from sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gases not controlled by the Montreal Protocol (national GHG inventories)
Main Applications:
Reporting of national GHG inventories
Main Users:
National GHG inventory compilers

Methodology

Scope:
All sources and sinks of anthropogenic emissions and removals of greenhouse gases that are not controlled by the Montreal Protocol
Concept Being Classified:
environment
Statistical Units:
geographic area / site
Main Principles:
Anthropogenic emissions and removals of greenhouse gases should be covered. All sources and sinks of such emissions and removals within national territory and offshore areas over which the country has jurisdiction should be covered. For details, see Section 8.2, Chapter 8 in Volumen 1 of the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories. http://www.ipcc-nggip.iges.or.jp/public/2006gl/vol1.html

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
Reason for Latest Revision:
In 2013, a new methodological guidance report on national GHG inventories "2013 Supplement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories: Wetlands" was produced. This report is supplementary to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines, and covers sources and sinks of GHG emissions and removals that were not fully covered by the 2006 IPCC Guidelines. In order to include such sources and sinks in the existing reporting tables provided in the 2006 IPCC Guidelines, the classification was slightly modified. Several new subcategories were added and a few subcategories were renamed under the Sector 3 "Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use".

Comments

The latest version of the classification of categories of sources and sinks of greenhouse gas emissions and removals adopted by the IPCC is the one provided in the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories with modifications explained in the 2013 Supplement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories: Wetlands. A complete list of the latet version of classification has not been published in a single document, therefore two ISBNs are shown in Section 1 and two URLs are shown in Section 6.
