Purpose of the Classification

Purpose:
The CWP Handbook, and included classifications of fishing vessels, covers all the intended range of fishery statistical concepts, definitions and classifications used by international agencies. The three types of vessel classification, GRT, length classes (length overall) and vessel types cover the major features critical in classifying vessels based on type.
Main Applications:
Assessing fleet capactiy, classification in vessel registration .
Main Users:
Statistical officers, fishery scientists, MCS (management, control and surveyance) of fishing activities

Methodology

Scope:
Type of fishing vessels used with a global emphasis on existing major fishing areas in the Atlantic, Indian, Pacific and Antarctic Oceans. Classification should be applied based on vessel shapes/type.

Reason for Latest Revision:
In general, revision is made according to the request from the CWP participating organizations (i.e. members). After the adoption ofThe United Nations Agreement for the Implementation of the Provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982 relating to the Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks (UNFSA), CWP continued its discussion to revise them in accordance with UNFSA requirement without conclusion. Currently ISSCFV is mainly utilized in vessel registration, not for statistical purpose.
