Purpose of the Classification

Statistical Domains:
2.4.1 Agriculture, forestry, fisheries
Purpose:
Although this classification was initially designed to improve the compilation of harmonised catch and effort data on the STATLANT B questionnaires and in fish stock assessment exercises, it has also been found very useful for fisheries technology and the training of fishermen. It has been used in particular for reference in works dealing with the theory and construction of gear and for the preparation of specialized catalogues on artisanal and industrial fishing methods.
Main Applications:
Identifying the fishing technology in reporting on fishing CATCH and EFFORT; a part of basic definition of diffeent "fisheries".
Main Users:
Fishery statistical offices, fishery scientists, MCS (management, control and surveyance) of fishing activities, fisheries technology and training fishermen.

Methodology

Scope:
The classification is developed based on fish entangling mechanisms and gear structue used with a global emphasis on existing major fishing areas in the Atlantic, Indian, Pacific and Antarctic Oceans.
Concept Being Classified:
goods, equipment
Statistical Units:
fishing operational unit; holding
Main Principles:
Inclusiveness and stability

Classification Structure

Definition of Structure:
Level:
Level Name:
Code Format:
Number of Items:
Level 1
Gear Categories
01
11 items
Level 2
Gear Categories
01.1
60 items
Criteria for Definition of Levels:
Gear categories are divided into respective sub-categories, which are given a standard abbreviation code (text). Both gear categories and their sub-divisions are assigned numeric codes. For example, Surrounding Nets are given the code 01 and the sub-category 'purse seines' is assigned the code 01.1 . The first level is determined based on fish entangling mechanisms, the second level on structure of gears to utilize that entangling mechanism.

Next Review:

Reason for Latest Revision:
Shift from 3-level structure to 2-level structure, leaving the third level for free definition for individual users; enhance the definition based on enhangling mechanism and structure; integrate "grappling and woundings" and "harvesing machines" into "miscellaneous gear"; removal of "Recreational Fishing Gear".
Major Changes:
Corresponding to the request from ICES/FAO Working Group on Fishing Technology and Fish Behaviour, CWP-23 (2010) established task force to review and revised the ISSCFG with paticipation of ICES and other interesting members in and CWP-24 (2013) agreed the Rev.4. Since CWP-24 did not constitute a quorum, the final adoption is postponed to the CWP-25 (2016).
