Revision of ISIC
Global Consultation on the proposed revised structure of
the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC) Rev. 4
This consultation is concluded.
In 2021 the United Nations Statistical Commission called for the revision of the ISIC Rev. 4 following the recommendations of the UN Committee of Experts on International Statistical Classifications (UNCEISC). Some of the main drivers for the revision of ISIC are globalization and digitalization which have changed the way in which many economic activities provide goods and services. New activities have gained importance while others have lost importance in the global economy, and rapid and dynamic changes took place in the information technology environment that all need to be reflected in the classifications. In addition, the increased awareness of the impact of the economy on the environment has created specialized activities to protect the environment. The revision of ISIC aims therefore to address these issues to reflect more closely the reality of current economy activities in the classification.
A Task Team on the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (TT-ISIC) was created by the UNCEISC, under the auspices of UNSC, for the revision of the ISIC. The task team worked through a list of issues identified through a global consultation in 2019 with countries and organizations. The TT-ISIC coordinated with the revision processes of relevant national and regional classifications, such as the Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Community (NACE), the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), and the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC).
Given the large number of issues and the time available to develop the revised structure of ISIC, the TT-ISIC, with the support of the Bureau of the UNCEISC, agreed to focus on the broad structure of the revised ISIC from the Section level (alphabetic letters) to the group level (three-digit codes). Therefore, the global consultation seeks feedback on the proposed new structure of ISIC at the Section level (alphabetic letters), Division level (two-digit code) and Group level (three-digit codes). The structure of ISIC the Class level (four-digit codes) will be finalized during 2022, and the complete structure of the revised ISIC, together with the explanatory notes, will be submitted to the UNSC for approval in 2023.
The proposed new structure of ISIC (up to the 3-digit level) will be submitted to the UNSC which will be held from 1-4 March 2022.
