Explanatory note

This subclass includes: - Coals with a gross calorific value (moist, ash-free basis) less than 24 MJ/ kg and a Vitrinite mean Random Reflectance less than 0.6 per cent. Brown coal comprises: * sub-bituminous coal, i.e. brown coal with a gross calorific value (moist, ash-free basis) equal to or greater than 20 MJ/kg but less than 24 MJ/kg * lignite, i.e. brown coal with a gross calorific value (moist, ash-free basis) less than 20 MJ/kg This subclass does not include: - Hard coal, cf. 11010
