The TSG considered the classification of Internet publishing in ISIC and in the CPC.

Discussion

Decision

The term "Internet publishing" comprises establishments that develop content exclusively for the Internet. The unique combination of text, audio, video, and interactive features present in informational or cultural products on the Internet justifies the separation of Internet publishers from more traditional publishers included in group 221 (Publishing). Since these activities can essentially be viewed as the electronic storage of data (assembled from one or more sources) and making this data available to others by allowing on-line access, they are similar to the database activites decribed in ISIC class 7240 (Database activities) and should be classified accordingly. Internet publishing is classified in ISIC class 7240 (Database activities) and CPC subclass 84300 (On-line information provision services).
