Description: At the mid-point of the time foreseen for enacting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, there is an urgent need for more timely information for measuring the progress achieved so far and identifying the main bottlenecks and areas lagging behind. The COVID-19 crisis put in clear evidence the importance of timely and granular information for monitoring trends and for guiding the policy responses. However, many SDG indicators rely on official data that still suffer from long publication delays or that is only available incompletely or with insufficient coverage. In recent years, statistical methodologies, space technologies, and online data tools, including those based on machine learning methods, satellite remote sensing images, cloud-end big data platforms, and new data sources have been applied to comprehensively address those information gaps. UNCTAD co-organizes an event on ways for increasing timeliness and coverage of SDG indicators at the 4th UN World Data Forum (24-27 April, Hangzhou, China). The forum will bring together 1 500 in-person and nearly 20 000 virtual participants from national statistical offices, international organizations, the geospatial community, academic organizations, the private sector, and civil society organizations to showcase innovations and build impactful partnerships. The Forum is organized under the guidance of the UN Statistical Commission and the High-level Group for Partnership, Coordination, and Capacity-Building for Statistics for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in close consultation with UN Member States and international partners. This session will highlight some recent examples of the works utilizing statistical methods and earth observation data in relation to specific SDG indicators. Rather than focusing on technical or computational details, the panelists will highlight the main challenges faced when applying their methods/utilities, as well as solutions and lessons learned that could help other actors to continue improving timeliness of SDG indicators at the national and international levels. Daniel Hopp, Statistician at UNCTAD, will present innovative methods of nowcasting using artificial intelligence. Daniel Hopp has a strongexperience in data ecosystems, machine learning, and programming to drive innovation in the domains of trade statistics, economic forecasting, and official statistics. Description: The discipline of official statistics is poised for a revolution, with the emergence of data science. In its traditional form, official statistics have been about managing massive outbound and reverse logistics. This was particularly evident when conducting censuses and surveys, as massive numbers of people and materials were sent out to collect data. Previously, these exercises were conducted through paper-based methods, but are now executed with handheld digital instruments. The digital transformation of official statistics should not stop at the data collection level, however; it should reform the entire production process through the exploitation of new digital means, frameworks, and approaches. Therefore, the objective of this session will be to discuss: The risks, challenges and opportunities associated with innovation in official statistics. The digital and data skills needed by national and international statistical organizations to respond to the changing nature of work and society in the future. The potential collaborative and open innovation to assist these institutions in the production of “augmented data”. The opportunities for partnership with civil society and stakeholders to implement digital tools and skills. Shaping an innovation implementation pathway based on best practices and success stories.

Description: African Statistics Day is an annual event celebrated on 18 November to raise public awareness of the importance of statistics in all aspects of social and economic life. The theme of this year is “Everyone counts: quality statistics for better management of forced displacement in Africa”, which is in line with the theme of the African Union Summit 2019, that is: “The year of refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons: towards durable solutions to forced displacement in Africa”. It was chosen to raise awareness on the critical importance of disaggregated statistics when responding to the core concept of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), “leaving no one behind”, and specifically to the challenge of handling forced displacement in Africa.
Description: Tuesday, 15 October 2019, will mark the Eleventh observance of Caribbean Statistics Day in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The theme for this year is the same as in the previous year, that is, “Building the Resilience of the Caribbean Community”. It is the same because of its continued relevance to the Community. Strong regional statistical co-operation is vital in the achievement of a resilient Community. Heads of Government endorsed the Strategic Framework for the Regional Strategy for the Development of Statistics (RSDS) at their Thirty-Ninth Regular Meeting (Jamaica, July 2018) recognising that it is central to the advancement of the regional integration process. It is designed to make available harmonised, intra-regional statistics to guide and monitor its progress and to provide information for decision-making that is evidence-based. Member States and Associate Members are encouraged to actively engage with stakeholders including, suppliers and users of data and specifically, schools, children and youth in general in promoting the importance of statistics to the development of the respective countries.
