United Nations Regional Workshop on Evaluation and Analysis of Census Data

The regional workshop is organized by the United Nations Population Fund's East and Southern Africa Regional Office and the United Nations Statistics Division.

The main objective of the training workshop is to improve the capacity of NSOs within the East and Southern Africa region to undertake analysis and evaluation of the quality of census data on demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of population, through demographic methods and comparison with other relevant data sources. The workshop will also provide a platform for discussing potential use of census data for generating SDG indicators related to demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of population and data disaggregation by age, sex, geographical location, disability and migration status.

Workshop on Revision 3 of the Principles and recommendations for population and housing censuses and census data evaluation

UNSD will conduct the Workshop on Revision 3 of Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses and Census Data Evaluation, in collaboration with Arab Institute for Training and Research in Statistics, in Amman, Jordan, from 19 to 23 October 2014. The workshop will bring together statisticians from twenty-two countries and representatives of international organizations.

The workshop aims to increase the knowledge of the government statisticians on the revised international principles and recommendations for population and housing censuses; enhance the knowledge of the staff on importance of evaluation of the quality of census data and identification of types of errors in census data through using demographic techniques; and improve their capability in identifying gaps and challenges in applying international standards in conducting population and housing censuses and improving the quality of data collected through the census.

The workshop also aims to provide a platform for participants to share their national experiences and learn from good practices.

Workshop on census evaluation

UNSD will conduct the Workshop on Census Evaluation, in collaboration with General Statistics Office of Viet Nam, in Hanoi, Viet Nam, from 2 to 6 December 2013. The regional workshop will bring together some fifteen national statisticians from eight Asian countries.

The main purpose of the workshop is to provide the staff of national statistical offices with hands-on training to master indirect demographic techniques necessary for the evaluation of census results. Participants will learn, in particular, the methods to evaluate age-sex structure of population, fertility as well as mortality data obtained from national population and housing censuses. Participants are also expected to establish own professional networks through exchange of experiences and knowledge on census data analyses.

United Nations workshop on census data evaluation for English-speaking African countries

The objectives of the workshop are to strengthen the technical capacity of the participating countries to evaluate the quality of their census data and identify any errors. Over the course of the workshop, some of the most commonly used techniques for the assessment of data relating to the age and sex structure of the population, fertility, mortality, migration, and socioeconomic characteristics of the population will be covered. In doing so, the workshop aims to draw participants’ attention to the importance of data evaluation as a step in the census process, as well as to provide them a hands-on opportunity to practice the fundamentals of conducting a census evaluation through demographic analysis. The workshop will also provide a forum to discuss national practices and to exchange experiences among the participating countries.


United Nations sub-regional workshop on Census Data evaluation

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) in cooperation with the Cambodian Institute of Statistics will organize a Workshop on Census Data Evaluation from 14 to 17 November 2011 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This workshop will be organized within the framework of the UN/DESA Development Account project for strengthening the statistical capacity of countries in South-East Asia. The objectives of the workshop are to strengthen the technical capacity of the participating countries to identify types of errors in census data and to apply methods of evaluating the quality of census data. Representatives from national statistical offices of Cambodia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Timor-Leste and Viet Nam are invited to the workshop. The workshop will also provide the forum to discuss national practices and to exchange experiences and lessons learned among the participating countries.
