What is MEIP?

The Multinational Enterprise Information Platform (MEIP) is a joint initiative of OECD and UNSD, aimed at providing detailed insights into the structure, digital presence, and media activities of the world's largest Multinational Enterprises (MNEs). These enterprises play a pivotal role in global trade, innovation, and economic development. Understanding their behavior and impact is crucial for shaping effective policies and promoting equitable practices. The creation of a global enterprise group register was endorsed by the United Nations Statistical Commission at its 46th session in 2015 to improve the understanding and the measurement of international trade and globalization statistics (E/2015/24, Decision 46/107, Item d(i)).

MEIP leverages publicly available data and advanced processing techniques to create a unique resource for analyzing MNEs. The platform links subsidiaries to key data from sources such as OpenCorporates, GLEIF, and PermID, enabling users to develop further insights.

The latest release of the Multinational Enterprise Information Platform covers data as of 31st December 2023, with previous editions available for download. Supplementary releases are planned annually, and efforts to enhance the timeliness, frequency, and coverage of the data are ongoing.

Key Components

Global Register

This register provides information on the structure of the 500 largest MNEs, including their headquarters, subsidiaries, locations, and ownership structures, where available.

Digital Register

This register details the global web presence of MNEs by offering a list of connected websites, ranked by their relative importance based on visitor traffic and link significance (page rank).

Media Monitor

This tracks media articles about the 500 largest MNEs for 2023 and 2024, highlighting significant events such as mergers, acquisitions, restructuring, and investments for each given company.

Dashboard

The Platform relies on a number of openly licensed datasets.

What's New?

MEIP now leverages a broader range of data sources, enhancing insights into MNE structures. These improvements strengthen the Platform by improving accuracy and expanding coverage, providing users with deeper insights into the structure and operations of MNEs. MEIP will continue integrating new high-quality sources as they become available, reaffirming its commitment to delivering comprehensive and reliable information for global stakeholders.
