UNGEGN and UNGGIM Collaborative Project

Good /practices of National Mapping Agencies and National Geographical Names Authorities

Creating a compendium of institutional arrangements on shared good practices between national mapping agencies and national geographical names authorities.

Objectives

This project seeks the contributions of national mapping agencies/national geospatial agencies (NMAs) and national geographical names authorities (NGNAs) in developing a compendium that outlines institutional arrangements and effective operational practices. The goal is to enhance collaboration between mapping agencies and geographical names authorities, thereby facilitating the collection, management, and dissemination of standardized geographical names.

To support the creation of the compendium, NMAs and NGNAs have been invited to complete a questionnaire designed to identify, compile, and document relevant and common principles, as well as to gather examples of good practices and guidelines. These resulting compendium and resources are expected to be used by both NMAs and NGNAs to strengthen their operations.

The Joint Expert Group on Geographical Names and Geospatial Information Management

The project is managed by a Joint Expert Group led by Ade K. Mulyana, Geospatial Information Agency (BIG) Indonesia and Michael A Tischler, US Geological Survey (USGS), United States of America, with support from staff of both agencies and the UN Statistics Division, UNGEGN Secretariat. The first meeting of the Joint Expert Group was held on Wednesday 10 June 2024. The group is executing its work through bi-weekly meetings or as the need arises.
