Background

The Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange (SDMX) is an initiative sponsored by eight international agencies: Bank for International Settlements, European Central Bank, Eurostat, International Labour Organisation, International Monetary Fund, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, United Nations, and the World Bank.

SDMX is a standard designed to facilitate the automation of data and metadata dissemination and exchange. The standard includes a technical specification on statistical data and metadata structures, data exchange protocols, registry, Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), etc.; a set of recommendations on the design of data structures that facilitate interoperability and the use of common concepts, codes, and classifications; and a large and constantly growing number of tools that facilitate the implementation of data and metadata exchange and dissemination. SDMX was endorsed by the United Nations Statistical Commission in June 2008 as a preferred standard for data and metadata exchange, and was approved as an ISO standard 17369:2013.

Objectives

The International Workshop on SDMX Data Dissemination and Reporting will introduce participants to data modelling, mapping, validation, reporting, and dissemination in the context of the Statistical Data and Metadata Exchange (SDMX) standard. The workshop will provide the participants with hands-on skills in commonly used SDMX tools, raise the participants’ awareness of the latest developments in the area, promote the implementation of SDMX at the national level, and enable them to share their experience in standards-based data exchange and dissemination.

Expected Outcomes

  • Improved skills of the Member States in creating SDMX structures for statistical data exchange and dissemination.
  • Improved skills of the Member States in converting statistical datasets standardized formats.
  • Improved knowledge of the Member States on disseminating statistical data including the SDGs.
  • Improved quality, availability, and timeliness of statistical data and metadata at national platforms, following the global standards.

The workshop will be conducted in English.
