Description: The achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires the availability of high qualitytimely and reliable data to produce the relevant SDG indicators and other statisticsdisaggregated as relevant. In order to meet this needofficial statistics must modernize and incorporate new data sourcesincluding Big Data. At its 53rd session in 2022the Statistical Commission underscored the importance of mainstreaming the use of big data and data science into the work programmes of national statistical offices and the necessity to include training in big data and data science into the training curricula of national statistical offices. This course is a first response to this injunction by sharing experienceand providing the pedagogical activities required for understanding the process leading to the production and dissemination of official statistics with new data sources.

Description: Within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)gender equality is not only a standalone goal but also one of the crosscutting universal values that underpins the SDGsand a necessary precondition for achieving the goals of the 2030 development agenda. Good qualitytimelycomparableand disaggregated gender data provide the evidence needed to measure progress towards achieving the gender-related SDG goals and targets. The 2022 Sustainable Development Goals Progress Report produced by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) shows that while there has been notable improvements in overall data vailability in Asia and the Pacific since the first benchmark report in 2017there are still significant data gaps. Notablyat the subregional levelthe report highlights a lack of sufficient data for Goal 5 (Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls) and thus presents an incomplete picture of anticipated progress towards this goal for the Pacific. Strengthening capacities to produce and use gender statistics is central to closing the gender data gap.

Description: The United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and Pacific (UNSIAP)together with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Statistics Korea (KOSTAT) will organize a regional training on education data capacity building from 15 to 19 May 2023in DaejeonRepublic of Korea. The program will focus on understanding education indicators based on household survey dataas well as administrative sources with a focus on SDG4 and other relevant SDG targets related to education such as child labour. Most of the indicatorshoweverwill come from MICS 6 datawhich should be available for all participating countries. In addition to the trainingthe capacity building activity will also serve as an opportunity for participating countries to share their experiences in terms of data useincluding both Education Management Information Systems (EMIS) and household data.
Description: Objective To delve into the development of indicator frameworks for inclusive and sustainable policies. The workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of ESCAP’s framework for policy and data integration and focus on key aspects of statistical indicators development. Moreover, the workshop will offer an opportunity for participating countries to share practical experiences. Expected Outputs Increased capacity of relevant national officials in assuring policy inclusiveness and developing a comprehensive indicator framework. All participants are expected to be engaged in the discussions and contribute towards the workshop outputs with demonstrating their national experiences. Background In 2021, ESCAP launched a project on "integrating policy and data to leave no one behind in selected countries in Asia and the Pacific," with support from the Republic of Korea. The project aims to assist countries in reviewing and developing comprehensive policy monitoring indicator frameworks that are well integrated with the four dimensions of development to leave no one behind. The workshop, jointly organized by the Republic of Korea National Statistics Office (KOSTAT) and ESCAP, is designed to (a) expand on the importance of policy and data integration through user-producer dialogue; (b) guide the process of developing national indicators, describing the characteristics of well-defined indicators; (c) introducing the tool ‘Every Policy is Connected (EPIC)’; and (d) provide participating countries with an opportunity to share their experiences. Description: The UN Statistics Division and Statistics Korea (National Statistical Office of the Republic of Korea) have co-organized every year an international seminar regarding important issues on the global statistical agenda since 2010. The seminar has covered a variety of social and economic issues from the perspective of statistics. For example, we have discussed the role of data and statistics in understanding open data and data disaggregation for reaching Sustainable Development Goals; and using big data for official statistics. As we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, the significance of timely data using new data sources and data linkage has increased and it has provided us with new opportunities to the international statistical community for discussing the data stewardship and the data security issues.

The 2021 edition of the Global Forum is hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea, on the theme reshaping tourism for a more resilient and sustainable tomorrow. It will provide a unique platform to support tourism recovery and develop a common transformation agenda for the tourism economy, to move to stronger, more sustainable and inclusive models of tourism development in the future. This year’s Global Forum on Tourism will be a hybrid event, online and in-person in Seoul Korea.

Description: The focus of this year's conference is on the use of Data Science for official statistics, in particular the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. In addition to the creation of Big Data centers next to the national statistical offices (NSOs) they have started creating Data Science Campuses as R&D centers, which develop and test new methods. They also have an educational program usually in cooperation with some universities. The Conference will cover the use of AI and machine learning for official statistics. The UN Global Working Group (UN GWG) created the UN Global Platform as a collaborative environment to develop and test new data sources, methods and algorithms for the global statistical system, such as new methods to compile agricultural crop yield using satellite data, migration and tourism statistics using mobile phone data and CPI estimates using scanner data which will be discussed during the conference. Many more pilot projects can be initiated on the Platform involving not only the statistical community and related public sector but also stakeholders from private sector, academia and civil society. The Conference will also cover the topic of changing the production line to introduce new data solutions in the national statistical systems.
Description: The Working Group met in the context of having being established by the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management at its seventh session in August 2017 to substantively address marine geospatial information with terms of reference that include issues related to inland water bodies and waterways with an overarching proviso to focus on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in particular, Sustainable Development Goal 14 - Life below water and to an extent, Goal 6 - Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
