Description: Across Asia and the Pacificviolence against women and girls is taking increasingly complex and lethal forms—from gender-related killings(femicide/feminicide) to rapidly evolving technology-facilitated abuse—yet both remain insufficiently measured due to persistent gaps in definitionsreportingand integrated data systems. In 20241at least 17,400 women and girls in Asia were killed by an intimate partner or family member—approximately 48 every day—according to joint United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) estimates. While this represents a decline from the previous yearit does not signal true progress. Insteadit reflects ongoing weaknesses in national data and reporting systemsincluding incomplete identification and classification of femicide and limited capacity to capture gender-related motives.

Description: In recent yearsthe data landscape has evolved rapidlycreating for National Statistical Offices (NSOs) both significant opportunities for innovation and important challenges in maintaining data quality and reliability. In response to these developmentsthe Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP) and the Ministry of Data And Statistics (MODS) are organizing a Regional Training on Data Science for Official Statisticsrecognizing both the opportunities and the challenges associated with integrating Data Science methods and tools into NSO processes. The overall objective of the week-long training is to build the capacity of NSOs to integrate Data Science methods into the production of Official Statistics. It seeks to strengthen participants’ skills in handlinganalyzingand visualizing data sourceswith a particular focus on reproducible methods and tools for monitoring and reporting Official Statistics and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicators.

Description: Disasters continue to have an ever-increasing impact on lifewell-being and sustainable development. Given these impactsthere is high demand at the localnational and international levels for qualityintegrated statistics to inform all phases of the disaster risk management cycle. Disaster related statistics are not only relevant to those working to prepare and respond to disasters but also to the public at largeresearch institutions and policy analysts at the local and national levels. For instancenational disaster management agencies need disaggregated and georeferenced information on populationincluding vulnerable groupsas well as critical infrastructure. Similarlyministries of finance need information on climate related risks to better prepare for potential shocks to the economy.

Similarlyministries of finance need information on climate related risks to better prepare for potential shocks to the economy. At the global levelin 2015 countries agreed to the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction aimed at substantially reducing disaster risk and losses. Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals also contain several goals and targets aimed at disaster risk reduction and minimizing losses. Both frameworks have indictor frameworks to measure progress towards achieving their respective targets which in turn require the compilation of disaster related indicators based on sound statistical methodology. Given the increased data demands at the localnational and global levelthere is a need to strengthen the capacities of national statistical systems to produce and disseminate disaster related information to better meet the needs of users for high quality integrated data on risks and impacts. The workshoporganized by the United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP) and the Statistics Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)in collaboration with Statistics Korea (KOSTAT) aims to further build capacities in the Asia and the Pacific for the compilation of disaster related information in support of national priorities as well as SDG and Sendai Framework reporting.

Description: The overall objective of the week-long training is to help participants better understand the use and benefits of Big Data in the production of gender statistics. To that endthe training program will present recent development in the compilation of gender statistics as well as new methodscase studies and processes that can facilitate the integration of Big Data in this process. The training will also emphasize the limitationsconstraints and privacy issues inherent to the use of Bignon-traditional or administrative data. Please refer to the attached concept notewhich provides a more detailed description of objectivesscope and requirements for the training.

Description: The achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires the availability of high qualitytimely and reliable data to produce the relevant SDG indicators and other statisticsdisaggregated as relevant. In order to meet this needofficial statistics must modernize and incorporate new data sourcesincluding Big Data. At its 53rd session in 2022the Statistical Commission underscored the importance of mainstreaming the use of big data and data science into the work programmes of national statistical offices and the necessity to include training in big data and data science into the training curricula of national statistical offices. This course is a first response to this injunction by sharing experienceand providing the pedagogical activities required for understanding the process leading to the production and dissemination of official statistics with new data sources.

Description: The United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and Pacific (UNSIAP)together with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Statistics Korea (KOSTAT) will organize a regional training on education data capacity building from 15 to 19 May 2023in DaejeonRepublic of Korea. The program will focus on understanding education indicators based on household survey dataas well as administrative sources with a focus on SDG4 and other relevant SDG targets related to education such as child labour. Most of the indicatorshoweverwill come from MICS 6 datawhich should be available for all participating countries. In addition to the trainingthe capacity building activity will also serve as an opportunity for participating countries to share their experiences in terms of data useincluding both Education Management Information Systems (EMIS) and household data.
Description: Objective To delve into the development of indicator frameworks for inclusive and sustainable policies. The workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of ESCAP’s framework for policy and data integration and focus on key aspects of statistical indicators development. Moreover, the workshop will offer an opportunity for participating countries to share practical experiences. Expected Outputs Increased capacity of relevant national officials in assuring policy inclusiveness and developing a comprehensive indicator framework. All participants are expected to be engaged in the discussions and contribute towards the workshop outputs with demonstrating their national experiences. Background In 2021, ESCAP launched a project on "integrating policy and data to leave no one behind in selected countries in Asia and the Pacific," with support from the Republic of Korea. The project aims to assist countries in reviewing and developing comprehensive policy monitoring indicator frameworks that are well integrated with the four dimensions of development to leave no one behind. The workshop, jointly organized by the Republic of Korea National Statistics Office (KOSTAT) and ESCAP, is designed to (a) expand on the importance of policy and data integration through user-producer dialogue; (b) guide the process of developing national indicators, describing the characteristics of well-defined indicators; (c) introducing the tool ‘Every Policy is Connected (EPIC)’; and (d) provide participating countries with an opportunity to share their experiences. The following countries from and Asia-Pacific region are invited: Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, Fiji, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, Mongolia, Palau, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Viet Nam. , EPiC tool: Overview Resources Workshops
