Description: The United Nations Statistics Division and Statistics Canada are jointly organizing a technical workshop in Ottawa, Canada, from 9 to 11 September 2025, aimed at shaping an integrated and forward-looking statistical system that fosters more effective, inclusive, and evidence-based policymaking. The workshop will focus on strengthening countries' capacities to produce social and demographic statistics that more accurately reflect complex societal issues and their interlinkages with the economy and the environment.
Description: The Committee for the Coordination of Statistical Activities (CCSA) promotes interagency coordination and cooperation on statistical programmes and consistency in statistical practices and development. As a forum of committed members it fosters good practices in statistical activities of international organisations, in accordance with the Principles Governing International Statistical Activities, and within the constraints of their own governance arrangements and resource envelopes. The members of the CCSA are committed to contribute actively to the development of a coordinated global statistical system producing and disseminating high-quality statistics, e.g. by facilitating the development and well functioning of regional and national statistical systems
Description: The Committee of the Chief Statisticians of the United Nations System promotes coherent and integrated system-wide United Nations actions to support statistics at the national, regional and international levels, following the principles governing international statistical activities, adopted by the Committee for the Coordination of Statistical Activities in 2005, and the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics, adopted by the General Assembly in 2015. Taking into account the comparative advantages of each member, the Committee encourages coordinated efforts by United Nations agencies and programmes in strengthening national statistical capacity through the definition of common approaches and joint interventions. The Committee supports in particular the modernization of national statistical systems and the reinforcement of their capacity to respond to new data demands for underpinning evidence-based policymaking, including the monitoring of global, regional and national development goals. Recognizing that national needs and priorities should guide the United Nations system’s efforts to support national statistical systems, the Committee supports the development and full implementation of international statistical standards in member States for the production of high-quality and internationally comparable data. The Committee promotes the coordination of the statistical programmes of the United Nations system entities with the aim of “delivering as one”, by fostering synergies, avoiding duplication and overlap, and facilitating data exchange. It promotes the adoption of common quality criteria to drive the statistical production of all agencies of the United Nations system and supports the sharing of knowledge and good practices. It also defines common United Nations positions on statistical matters, to be reported at the Statistical Commission or at other coordination bodies, such as the Committee for the Coordination of Statistical Activities.
Description: The ISI World Statistics Congresses (WSC) take place once every two years in different countries. Though organized by the ISI, we work closely with the country’s National Statistics Office and Society. The WSCs and their associated events are the highpoint of activities of the ISI where all our Associations, Committees, members and participants involved in statistics worldwide come together to participate in the many different activities and highlights of the WSC for an entire week and associated activities immediately before or after this week. Each WSC has a rich Scientific Programme that include invited paper sessions (IPS) and contributed paper/poster sessions (CPS). A full Administrative Programme includes meetings of the Executive Committees, Councils, General Assemblies and Committees of the ISI and the Associations, and special interest meetings relevant to the particular WSC. The Social Programme makes the WSC an event to remember and gives participants a flavour of the culture of the host country. The Social Programme also includes daytime activities for accompanying persons. Associated with the WSC are Satellite Meetings and Short Courses of the ISI and the Associations. These take place in or close to the host city before and after the main WSC week and combine with the WSC to provide an overall outstanding international statistical event which is memorable in every way.
Organizer(s): UNSD Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity European Commission European Space Agency IUCN
Description: This side event at the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) is organized by the Secretariat of Convention of Biological Diversity, European Commission, the European Space Agency, the United Nations Statistics Division and the International Union for Conservation of Nature Mainstreaming biodiversity is generally understood as ensuring that biodiversity and ecosystems are adequately factored into national policies and practices. Natural capital accounting is the umbrella term used to indicate the use of an accounting framework to provide a systematic way to measure and report on stocks and flows of natural capital. The underlying premise if that nature is important to society and the economy and should be recognized as an asset that must be maintained and managed and its contributions better integrated into the regular statistical production process. The System of Environmental Economic Accounting is the accepted international statistical standard for natural capital accounting, providing a framework for organizing and presenting statistics on nature and its relationship with the economy. It is essential for integrating biodiversity considerations into measures of national performance and policy appraisal and integral to inclusive wealth accounts. According to the 2021 global assessment on the SEEA implementation, approximately 90 countries compile the SEEA with 35 countries compiling ecosystem accounts. Scaling up the implementation in countries is an important goal of the statistical community, which adopted the SEEA implementation strategy in 2022 This side event will examine how the SEEA can help mainstreaming biodiversity into relevant strategies and plans, systematically integrate biodiversity into programmes, policies and projects, promote inter-ministerial coordination and setting time-bound targets, clear roles and responsibilities. Using the SEEA as the underlying statistical framework for some of the indicators in the monitoring framework will result in indicators that are consistent across domains comparable across countries and over time and permit monitoring progress towards achieving the goals and targets. The event will feature speakers from different communities and will highlight the importance of the SEEA to support integrated policies and decision making.
