Description: The Global Policy Forum on Natural Capital is the signature annual event of the Global Program on Sustainability of the World Bank. Co-organized with the United Nations Statistics Division, the Forum aims to connect users—primarily the investment community and policy makers—with both data and analytics, and data providers, to share knowledge and experiences on incorporating natural capital accounting and approaches in decision making. The 7th Global Policy Forum on Natural Capital, Implementing the Global Biodiversity Framework: Leveraging Natural Capital Data, Accounting and Analysis to Inform Policies, taking place in Kigali, Rwanda, will bring together governments and other relevant stakeholders to discuss the policies that will help with the implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and thus contribute to the achievement of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) goals and targets. Over two days, sessions will focus on and highlight the importance and need to leverage existing data and analytics on natural capital and ecosystem services, including natural capital accounting, to design such policies and actions.

Description: In order to support the uptake of the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting – Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA EA) in member countries of the Gaborone Declaration for Sustainability in Africa (GDSA), UN Environment, the UN Statistics Division, UNDP, the BC3, the GDSA Secretariat and the Regional Hub of the UN Global Platform in Rwanda are partnering with countries in a training programme for application of ARIES for SEEA in selected GDSA member countries. ARIES for SEEA Explorer is a tool developed by the Basque Centre of Climate Change (BC3) to produce standardized, scalable and customizable SEEA ecosystem accounts by using not only available global remote-sensing data and models, but also national data sources and models. The technical training workshop is held in Kigali, Rwanda from 18-22 July 2022, with the objective to build capacity among country practitioners on the conceptual basis for ecosystem accounting, data and modelling requirements, and the use of ARIES for SEEA to develop accounts. The technical training workshop is aimed at staff of national statistical offices, relevant line ministries, policymakers and researchers who are interested in developing ecosystem accounts and their use in policymaking.
Description: As part of its ongoing work on building productive capacities for structural economic transformation, UNCTAD will organize a capacity building training for statistical experts of Rwanda to assist in evidence-based policymaking in these areas. UNCTAD will also brainstorm with the relevant institutions of Rwanda on the newly developed “Rwanda Programme” for transformational development of the country. In this context, UNCTAD discusses the Rwanda Comprehensive Programme of Support, which aims at fostering productive capacities, export diversification and structural transformation in Rwanda. This will build on the objectives outlined in the country's Vision 2050. Specifically, the programme addresses the binding constraints on exports, develops a business plan for Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and Industrial Parks (IPs), enhances the role of private sector development and harnesses the potential of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for trade and economic development UNCTAD is also invited to participating in the 6th Annual Economic Research Conference organized by the Economic Policy Research Network (EPRN Rwanda) of Rwanda. The event gathers national and international researchers, academics, professionals and other relevant decision makers around the topic of “Building Productive Capacities for Structural Economic Transformation” and is an opportunity to suggest innovative policy solutions towards sound economic development. It is interesting to note that Rwanda has dedicated this year's EPRN Conference to the above-mentioned theme, indicating the impact of UNCTAD’s work on domestic policy deliberations on issues of trade and economic development.

Description: An inception workshop for the Data4Now initiative was hosted by the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda, in Kigali, Rwanda. In the workshop, funded jointly by the four core partners, representatives from national statistical systems in the eight trailblazer countries, as well as partners from the private sector, academia and international identified priority needs and deliverables, and explored possible partnerships and solutions around data, technology, and methods with highest potential impact to attain those deliverables.
Description: The 5th International Conference on Big Data for official statistics will be held in Kigali, Rwanda from 29 April until 3 May 2019. The first 3 days of the week will be devoted to training workshops for African countries and a seminar of activities of a Data Science Campus for official statistics. The seminar will demonstrate projects for the African continent, including projects on Digital Earth Africa. The last 2 days of the week will be for keynote speakers and several high-level panels. This week in Kigali will show that new data sources and new technologies can also be used in Africa to get better data for better policies.
