5. Names in colonisation-names as claims or mementos (continued ...)

 


Towns or areas were sometimes renamed when new powers took over. Therefore, through time, city or area names changed. For example, the capital of Nieuw-Nederland was called Nieuw-Amsterdam, later, after 1674 when is was occupied by England, it was renamed New York. The names Nieuw-Amsterdam and New York were memento's of the towns back home from which the colonizers had left.
