Forenames or given names are subject to trends: one year parents may name their children after football stars or after succesful politicians, and the other year they mey prefer more traditional names. The illustration at left shows e.g. that before 1950 in the Netherlands traditional Dutch names were given, in either full or shortened versions, like Johannes/Jan.
