Description

This course aims to build the skills for acquiring AIS data via the UN Global Platform and performing simple data analysis. It includes an introduction to the UN Global Platform AIS data, procedures to request access to the platform, methods of acquiring both AIS and Ships Register data, an introduction to their data structures, and samples of reading and filtering AIS data using PySpark.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Know the procedures for requesting access to the AIS data<\li>
  • Set up the connection to the UN Global Platform<\li>
  • Explain the technology being used for cleaning and storing AIS data<\li>
  • Construct and apply an extraction query to the AIS data<\li>
  • Be conscious of the partitioning of AIS data storage for query optimization<\li>
  • Obtain AIS-related code samples and resources from GitLab<\li>

This e-learning course is a self-paced course with modules developed by the Task Team on AIS data of the UN Committee of Experts on Big Data and Data Science for Official Statistics.

The course takes approximately 2 hours to complete.
