International Workshop on Science, Technology and Innovation Statistics

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development positions science, technology, and innovation (STI) as one of seven key action areas for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) are primary productive forces and drivers of growth. Consequently, statistics on the advances and use of science, technology, and innovation are of great importance for evidence-based policymaking, monitoring of STI for achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Thus, in recent years, with science, technology and innovation becomes more are more important, there are higher requirements for the continuous and in-depth reform and development of STI statistics. The revision of international norms also brings new challenges to the top-level design and monitoring and evaluation method of STI statistics. There is a need to constantly discuss new methodologies, practices, and progress in STI statistics and improve STI surveys and analyses.

Within this context, the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) and the National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS China) are jointly organizing an International Workshop on Science, Technology, and Innovation Statistics. This is a 3-day workshop, held in Shenzhen, China from 25-27 July 2023. The main goal of the Workshop is to assist the participants to understand the latest methodologies and practices of STI surveys, and strengthen the participants’ capacity to compile, analyze STI statistics. The workshop will provide an overview of the Frascati Manual 2015, and Oslo Manual 2018, and share best country and international practices, including STI indicators, statistics, and analyses. The sharing of experiences will also support the development of further STI statistics guidance.

The workshop will be held in English and Chinese. Simultaneous two-way translation of Chinese to English and English to Chinese will be provided.
