In recent years, application of new technologies has introduced impressive improvements in ways censuses are being conducted in the 2010 round of population and housing censuses. An increasing number of countries have adopted new technologies in the various phases of the census process particularly in enumeration, data processing and dissemination. For instance several countries have used the Internet to enumerate a part of their population; telephone interview techniques and hand-held devices are being used for managing better the collection operations of censuses; and mobile phone technology is implemented for monitoring of field operation.
The Seminar offers an opportunity for Chief Statisticians and statistical managers to obtain a more in depth understanding of the new technologies through sharing of experiences by those countries who have actually implemented them at various stage of the census operation. Some of the countries who have used new technologies in the 2010 census round will present on lessons learnt, opportunities and challenges in adopting new technologies in censuses.
