Chapter 8.
Analysis of poverty dynamics
This chapter extends the analysis of Chapter 7 to the analysis of changes in poverty over time. It examines three important conceptual issues in poverty analysis: relationship between income inequality and poverty at a single point in time and income mobility over time, distinction between chronic and transient poverty, and issues concerning the measurement of income growth among the poor. It then discusses two important practical issues, the relative merits of panel data and repeated cross-sectional data, and the problem of measurement error in income and expenditure data.
