Introduction

This chapter shows the semantic, phonetic and graphic aspects
of language. It traces the development of the graphic aspects
from Sumeria 3500BC, from logographic or ideographic via syllabic
into alphabetic scripts resulting in a number of script families.
It gives examples of the various scripts in maps (see underlined
script names) and finally deals with combination of scripts
on maps.
