International workshop on Energy Statistics2-5 December 2008, Aguascalientes, Mexico The United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) at its thirty-sixth and thirty-seventh sessions recognized, inter alia, the significance of energy statistics, recommended their development as part of official statistics and called for the revision and further development of the relevant international standards. As a result the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) in cooperation with the Oslo Group on Energy Statistics and the InterSecretatiat Working Group on Energy Statistics have embarked in the preparation of International Recommendations for Energy Statistics (IRES). IRES is intended to cover a broad range of issues from basic concepts, definitions and classifications to data sources, data compilation strategies, energy balances and dissemination. Once approved by the Commission, IRES will provide a firm foundation for a long-term development of energy statistics based on the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics. A key element for the preparation of IRES is a worldwide consultation with national energy statistics compilers and relevant international/ regional organizations. In this context, the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) is jointly organizing with the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) of Mexico an International Workshop on Energy Statistics from 2 to 5 December 2008 in Aguascalientes, Mexico. The main objectives of this Workshop are to inform countries on the status of preparation of IRES, and to consult with them on issues they face in the collection, compilation and dissemination of energy statistics.
