Workshop on compilation of statistics of international trade in services

6 - 9 February 2007, Cairo, Egypt


The workshop was organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA) in collaboration with United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) and Middle East Technical Assistance Centre/ International Monetary Fund (METAC/IMF) and was held in Cairo 6 - 9 February 2007.

The purpose of the workshop was to:

(1) build and strengthen national skills in applying the statistical systems and classifications related to trade in services

(2) present and discuss the statistical treatment of modes of supply and services transactions between residents and non-residents

(3) develop, improve and upgrade countries’ capabilities in collecting and processing statistics of international trade in services

(4) share the experiences and concerns of ESCWA member countries and UN organizations working on statistics of international trade in services.

The workshop discussed the classifications, statistical concepts and methods associated with international trade in services, data collection strategies and characteristics of the services sector.
