A toponymy contest was organized in conjunction with the 25th UNGEGN Session held in Nairobi, the first UNGEGN session to take place in Africa. Its aim was to promote the awareness of the importance of geographical names, the role they play in our relationship with the environment and in our spatial understanding. Participants, from Africa, prepared a short essay or a poem about a particular place and its toponym, or about a group of toponyms.
