The trust-fund project on statistical capacity development between China and the UN organizes study visits for officials from China and, if appropriate, other developing countries to participate in study visits to other National Statistical Offices, international seminars and conferences to enhance the exchange of experiences and good practices in selected statistical fields.

Study visit to the Hungarian Statistical Office, UNIDO and the Federal Statistical Office of Germany

A delegation from the National Bureau of Statistics of China, funded by the trust-fund project on statistical capacity development between China and the UN, undertook a study visit to the Hungarian Statistical Office, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Federal Statistical Office of Germany from 17 to 25 January 2011. Its purpose was to familiarize Chinese experts with the experience of other National Statistical Offices in organization of enterprise surveys, data collection methods, use of business register as a surveys frame, etc. The knowledge gained during the visit will help the Chinese experts to improve and optimize their economic statistics programme.

Third International Seminar on Early Warning and Business Cycle Indicators
Moscow, Russian Federation, 17-19 November 2010

This seminar was part of a series of three international seminars initiated by UNSD and Eurostat in February 2009 for seeking a coordinated statistical response to the global economic and financial crisis. This third and final seminar formulated recommendations for the monitoring of business cycles and early identification of turning points, as well as strategies for future work on improving statistical tools for this purpose. These recommendations and strategies were presented to the United Nations Statistical Commission at its 42nd Session in February 2011. The Statistical Commission endorsed a programme of work at national, regional and international level and encouraged countries in putting into place best practices for early warning and business cycle indicators as a monitoring and evaluation framework for macroeconomic surveillance purposes.

The trust-fund project on statistical capacity development between China and the UN, funded the participation of a delegation from the National Bureau of Statistics of China at this seminar. The delegation included: Ms. Junping Bao, Mr. Hanchao Guo, Mr. Shouguo Hou, Mr. Yingdong Jia, Ms. Yuanyuan Wei and Mr. Peng Zhang.

Global Forum on Gender Statistics
Manila, Philippines, 11-13 October 2010

The 2010 Global Forum was held as part of the Global Gender Statistics Programme promoted by the IAEG-GS with the purpose of enhancing the capacity of countries to collect, disseminate and use quality gender statistics. The forum, the third one since the IAEG-GS was established, provided an important opportunity to review and discuss new initiatives and data collection tools for the improvement of gender statistics.

Ms. LIU Wei from the Department of Social Statistics participated in the Forum on behalf of the National Bureau of Statistics of China.

30th CIRET Conference: Economic Tendency Surveys and Services Sector
New York, USA, 13 - 16 Oct 2010

The conference was hosted by the Conference Board. The overall aim of the Centre for International Research on Economic Tendency Surveys (CIRET) conferences is to encourage and improve communication, exchange and co-operation between academics and practitioners who conduct economic surveys, analyse survey data and develop or make use of cyclical indicators. CIRET is also a forum for discussion and application of new methodological developments and their results. The special topic of the 30th CIRET conference was the Economic Tendency Surveys and Financial Markets.

The trust-fund project on statistical capacity development between China and the UN, funded the participation of a delegation from the National Bureau of Statistics of China in this conference. The delegation included: Mr. Jiancheng Pan, Ms. Guanhua Wang, Mr. Yang Wu, Ms. Xiaoying Yang and Ms. Yangwei Li.

International Seminar on Information and Communication Technology Statistics
Seoul, Republic of Korea, 19-21 July 2010

This seminar was jointly organized by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Statistical Office of the Republic of Korea (Statistics Korea). Statistics on information and communication technologies (ICTs) have been one of the most dynamic areas of statistics in recent years, driven by user demand and the need to establish international guidelines for their measurement. The fast changing nature of this area requires that statistical standards and definitions are updated to provide the most reliable data. The seminar was an opportunity to review progress that has been made in the production of ICT statistics over the past years, discuss new developments and allow the exchange of country experiences in this field.

The delegation included: Ms. Luan Jinhui, Ms. Dang Ruihong, Ms. Gao Yajie, Ms. Zhong Weiqin. Ms. Zhong is from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

International Seminar on Early Warning and Business Cycle Indicators
Scheveningen, The Netherlands, 14 - 16 December 2009

This seminar was the second seminar organized as part of a series of three international seminars initiated by UNSD and Eurostat in February 2009 for seeking a coordinated statistical response to the global economic and financial crisis. The seminar was a follow-up to the first seminar, hosted by the Statistics Canada in Ottawa, from 27 to 29 May 2009. The seminar reviewed the analytical frameworks used by the policy analysts to assess the development of economic and financial crisis and to determine the suite of analytical indicators that can be derived from the agreed Ottawa data template of high frequency statistics. The seminar also focused on the usefulness of composite and economic sentiment indicators in tracking the crisis as recommended by the Ottawa seminar. Furthermore, the seminar provided information about the outcome of the global assessment of the Ottawa data template on availability, timeliness and comparability of high frequency and flash estimates.
