Issue 5. Measuring the output of government services

Back to Research Agenda

Description of the issue
The SNA recommends that the value of non-market production provided without charge, or at prices that are not economically significant, should be estimated as the sum of the costs of production (2008 SNA paragraphs 6.128 to 6.132). The basis for this recommendation is the lack of market prices for non-market production. However, there is continuing research on trying to find alternative ways to measure the output of government.
Discussions on the issue
The issue still needs to be addressed.
