PMA2020/Uganda Principal Investigator, Performance Monitoring and Accountability 2020
Dr. Fredrick E Makumbi is an Associate Professor, and a former (2010-2014) Department Chair of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the School of Public Health, College of Health Sciences, Makerere University (Kampala, Uganda). His research focus includes the Demographic impact of HIV/AIDS (infant and child mortality and orphanhood), reproductive health and adolescent sexual behaviors. He has extensive community-based research experience in randomized trials and longitudinal studies accrued over a twenty five-year period while he worked with the Rakai Health Sciences program (www.rhsp.org). He has coordinated and managed large databases including data for critical statistical analyses on various research studies with the RHSP (as the primary trial statistician on the randomized trials of male circumcision and acyclovir prophylaxis). Dr.Makumbi is currently the Uganda-PI on the Performance Monitoring & Accountability (PMA2020), a Bill&Melinda funded project that collects data at community level for monitoring progress of the Family Planning indicators by 2020 (http://pma2020.org). He is also the team-leader on the Bilharzia study, that was conducted to determine the national estimate of the schistosomiasis infection, and the effect of national schistosomiasis Program on the schistosomiasis infection in Uganda. He has extensive knowledge of Health Management Information System (HMIS) and has published from these routine records from health facilities in Uganda. He provides support to the Ministry of Health Safe Male Circumcision Program as a member of the Safety Monitoring Team, where he provides data management and statistical analysis support. He is a member of ethics review committees (IRC) at the National AIDS Research Committee and the Higher Degrees Research and Ethics Committee at the School of Public Health-Makerere University. He has been engaged by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to offer short courses in Epidemiology and Biostatistics in Seychelles at the Ministry of health Family Health & Nutrition Unit (May 2018) and, at the National Food Technology Research Center, Kanye in Botswana (August 2018).
