Land and water systems are intricately linked and provide a wealth of benefits to society. They also sustain an increased demand for their services from agriculture, energy and domestic use, particularly in cities and urban areas. At the same time, informed decision-making at the national and sub-national level is tantamount to achieving sustainable development and needs to account for how investment in one sector may have implications on other sectors.

Readily available Earth Observations and geospatial information offers decision-makers accurate and timely information on how ecosystems are changing, which may affect their ability to provide societies and economies with sustainable ecosystem services that underpin the ability to achieve sustainable development. This session will provide an overview of currently available Earth Observation information on water and land, and how it can complement in situ data on cities and population to demonstrate the value of using this data to support policies across these sectors. Examples will include the monitoring of changes to land use for different ecosystem types, including water-related ecosystems and agricultural statistics; and how to use this information for integrated decision making.

UN Environment, in its capacity as the global authority for the environment, and UN Global Working Group on Big Data for Official Statistics are jointly hosting this session together with Google Earth Engine, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States of America, Statistics Canada, European Space Agency, the European Union Joint Research Center and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
