GIS Training
The different capabilities and functions of GIS software are explained in a step-by-step fashion for each exercise which guides the user through the implementation of a specific activity within the software. Several exercises are conducted using a standard commercial GIS software product. The UN does not endorse the use of any specific software provider or spatial data provider. The software and data in these exercises are not officially endorsed by the UN, and are available for free training purposes only. No commercial use of this material is allowed.

Creating a File Geodatabase
In this exercise you will create a file geodatabase utilizing ArcCatalog. Creating a new file geodatabase involves creating a special file folder on disk using ArcGIS. This is a simple, straightforward process that is performed by using ArcCatalog or geoprocessing tools.

Manual Digitizing
This exercise is useful for those that will have access to imagery. The following procedure will be the same for aerial photography or imagery. For this exercise, you will use imagery provided by GeoEye and manually digitize (what is referred to as heads-up digitizing) theoretical enumeration area polygons. Note: These areas do not represent the true sizes of any particular enumeration areas. As they vary widely depending on many factors (population density, dwellings, landscape, etc.) The spatial reference of the imagery has already been defined.

Producing Thematic Maps for Dissemination
In this exercise you will work with an existing file geodatabase which contains administrative boundaries (named wards) feature class and population tabular data. The population data was created for this exercise and is not reflective of real-world values. The steps take you through one method to interrupt and visualize the census data. The final product will be a map view depicting three years of population data that has been classified using the quantile method.

Enumeration Areas
In this exercise you will work with an existing file geodatabase and create new enumeration areas within the established larger census area maintaining geographic integrity between areas. Attributes will be updated within the feature class. Finally, you will join a database containing census attributes with wards feature class, allowing you to further map and analyze the census attributes in a future exercise.

Displaying GPS Data
In this exercise you will work with an existing GPS dataset to display GPS data in ArcMap. The data are GPS waypoints recorded that for purposes of this exercise theoretically represent the number of dwellings counted by a census official at a location of interest.

Displaying Data Using Quantum GIS
In this exercise you will work with familiar existing Raster (Image) and Vector (Point, Line, Polygon) data and display these data on QuantumGIS or QGIS. This exercise is designed to provide the basics of getting data into Quantum GIS and to familiarize users with the QGIS Interface. It will take you briefly through the display of Raster satellite imagery (IKONOS) and Vector polygon, line, and point data (shapefiles) provided by the city on New York planning department.
