Andres Vikat

Biography

Andres Vikat is with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) as Chief of the Social and Demographic Statistics Section. Work under his responsibility includes the development of guidelines on statistical methodology, building national statistical capacities, and measuring progress on the Sustainable Development Goals. As head of the UNECE Population Unit until 2010, he was leading the pan-European Generations and Gender Programme of data collection and research, and the implementation of the United Nations policy framework on ageing in the UNECE region. Andres Vikat has held teaching and research positions at the universities of Helsinki, Tampere and Stockholm, and at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research.

He holds a PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Helsinki.

His talk at the Forum will highlight emerging issues in gender statistics on which UNECE countries are working together, such as the measurement of power and decision-making within the household, digital divide, gender identity, and the differential impact of the Covid pandemic on women and men.
