Valid from : 2017 – 2020

Purpose: Croatian Bureau of Statistics (CBS) developed the statistical educational portal Stedy as part of the Eurostat project Support for Statistical Literacy actions in the area of a competition, gamification and e-learning. It is part of the DIGICOM (Digital communication, User analytics and Innovative products) project, which was aimed at modernizing the communication and dissemination of European statistics within the ESS Vision 2020. In order to promote statistical literacy, CBS and 12 European statistical offices participated in Work Package 4 (WP 4 – Communication and promotion). STEDy is not an ordinary portal which is only based on theory, it also provides practical examples, interactive visualizations and tasks in which users can immediately check their understanding and application of statistics.

Target Audience:

  • School children/ teachers
  • Universities (students/teachers)
  • General public

Providing Entity:

  • National Statistical Office

Language:

  • English
  • Croatian

Products:

  • E-learning

Mode of implementation: In Croatia, teachers are constantly looking for different ways to help students learn. That is why the Croatian Bureau of Statistics developed STEDy – Statistical Educational Portal. The plan was to develop an interactive web tool, intended for supporting the area of statistical literacy, which could serve as an educational material in the process of self-learning. The idea for developing this kind of e-learning interactive tool for statistical literacy came from Seeing Theory, created by Daniel Kunin with the support of Brown University’s Royce Fellowship Program. STEDy – Statistical Educational Portal contains interactive visualizations for statistical concepts, ranging from basic statistical measures (e.g. median) to more complex methods (e.g. prognostic models). The content of this portal was drawn up with the assistance of professors from the J. J. Strossmayer University of Osijek: Full Professor Mirta Menšić, Assistant Professor Danijel Grahovac and Associate Professor Nenad Šuvak. The portal is designed in such a way that users can interact with data directly on the visualization and observe the result. This educational portal is created mainly for students and teachers, but also for the general public. This kind of web application gives teachers an excellent chance to demonstrate and visualize the statistical subject matter more clearly and comprehensibly, and enables them to prepare study material for students. The portal is bilingual; therefore, teachers and students who are not from Croatia can use it as well.

Outcomes: Statistical literacy is an important skill for all young people; it can help them to make grounded decisions in today’s complex world. The Croatian Bureau of Statistics (CSB) as the main disseminator of official statistics in Croatia invests a great effort in the promotion of statistical literacy. CBS noticed that teachers are constantly looking for ways to bring mathematics and statistics closer to students. Therefore, with the portal STEDy, CBS helped teachers and students. It provides practical examples, interactive visualizations and tasks in which users can immediately check their understanding and application of statistics, for which he received a very positive reaction from teachers and students. STEDy currently consists of five chapters: Chapter 1 – Data description (ten topics); Chapter 2 – Basic concepts of probability (two topics); Chapter 3 – Random variable (six topics); Chapter 4 – Distributions (three topics) and Chapter 5 - Statistical inference (seven topics). By the end of 2022, CBS plans to add additional topics.
