Purpose: Objective is to develop knowledge and interest in official statistics amongst post graduate students of statistics through out the country

Mode of implementation: The interested Post-Graduate students of statistics studying in recognised universities/colleges/institutions are invited to participate in the competition. Participating students are required to write an essay, on any one topic given on the spot in about 5000 words within three hours. The winners of the competition are felicitated on Statistics Day celebration held every year on 29th June by giving Prize money, Memento, certificate, folder and Pen Drive etc. Prize money is given to four participants which ranges from INR15000 (USD 200) to INR 5000 (USD 75). Winners are provided train fare and traveling allowances to travel to Delhi to receive the award. In addition, they along with their accompanying guardians are provided local transport, lodging & boarding. One day Delhi sightseeing tour is also organized for them usually on 30th June.

Outcomes: This gives visibility to official statistics in the Universities/ colleges and Institutions from where students participate in the competition. The students also get exposed to Indian official statistical system. Some of the students after completion of their post-graduation also compete for and join Indian Statistical Service.

Challenges: Students are not so much attracted to enter in competition since they look forward to employment in software development in private sector industries which is more lucrative.
