Purpose: As Mozambique is a country with low statistical literacy, efforts are being made to reduce this low literacy. One of the initiatives is the journalistic award that encourages journalists to create stories using official statistics. 1. In this way, it helps to increase the population's knowledge about the correct use of statistics. When journalists use official data in their reports, they help the public better understand the numbers, which strengthens statistical literacy in society. 2. This ensures that the information disclosed is reliable, accurate and verifiable, which combats misinformation and promotes quality journalism.

  • Promoting the Use of Data: Award-winning reports that involved data analysis promoted the use of statistics in society, particularly in academia, showing their relevance for understanding economic, social, and political issues.
  • Encouraging Collaboration: Journalistic awards motivate statistics producers to collaborate more closely with journalists, providing data in a clear and accessible way to facilitate the interpretation and dissemination of information.
  • Greater Transparency in Data Dissemination: Recognition of journalists who correctly use statistics released by INE to improve their reporting methods.

  • Challenges: We have the challenge of mobilizing financial resources annually to support this activity.
