Quantity and Weight Data in UN Comtrade

UN Comtrade background paper by Matthias Reister and Markie Muryawan

Created Oct. 2009 Updated Nov.2019

This paper informs how the quantity and weight information reported by countries is standardized and, where necessary and possible, estimated in order to provide users with comparable and as comprehensive as possible information on the supplementary quantity and net weight.

The specific methodology used by UNSD on compiling standard unit values (SUV) is explained on in the attached Report on Standard Unit Values, 2007. These SUVs are being used in the processing of data to estimate non-match/missing quantity information.

2019: ITC, FAO, and UNSD are embarking in on a project to harmonize outliers' detection and quantity estimation methodologies.
