Additionally, there are a number of international research projects for the application of small area estimation in official statistics. The projects were carried out collaboratively by researchers, national and international statistical offices and governmental agencies.  Kordos (2014) presents a more detailed overview of the following projects and developments of small area estimation in official statistics. For the project results, please use the link of the project name.

ProjectPeriodDescription
Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates (SAIPE)Ongoing

The program by the US Census Bureau produces annual estimates of income and poverty for all U.S. states and counties and estimates of school-age children in poverty for all school districts.

ESSnet Project for SAE2009-2012The project focused on the development of a framework for the production of small area estimates for ESS social surveys.

Small Area Methods for Poverty and Living Condition Estimates (SAMPLE)

2008-2011

The project focused on the development of new indicators for a better understanding of poverty and inequality and its estimation at the local level.

Advanced Methodology for Laeken Indicators (AMELI)2008-2011The project aimed to develop a system for monitoring policy performance and their impact on progress including regional breakdowns.
Bayesian methods for combining multiple Individual and Aggregate data Sources in observational studies (BIAS)

2005-2008,

2008-2011

The project aimed to develop, among others, statistical frameworks for combining data from several data sources. One part of the first program and the second program focused on small area estimation. For the developments, Bayesian hierarchical models were used.

Enhancing Small Area Estimation Techniques to meet European needs (EURAREA)2001-2004The project aimed to evaluate standard small area estimation approaches and develop new methodology where needed. The developed theory was made available in a SAS application.
