This handbook introduces key steps to generate displacement and disaster statistics where mobile phone data, specifically call detail record (CDR) data, are used as inputs for the production of statistics. This section explains the characteristics of CDR data, which may need to be considered when the results are use in the disaster context. It also explains how CDR data are useful for estimating population movements and travel patterns following disastrous events. The examples show that both CDR data and traditional survey data have advantages as well as caveats, and these can provide useful insights on displacement and disaster statistics when combined.
