The aim of the project was to appraise the “Environmental industry”, which comprises the commercial production of goods and services aimed at measuring, preventing, limiting or making good damage to the environment, e.g. water, atmospheric and soil pollution, waste management, noise, and threats to ecosystems generally. The main descriptive variables used were turnover, investments, and employment by sex and educational qualifications. An estimate was also made of turnover by environmental domain. In addition to presenting the principal results of the statistical survey of enterprises, this report attempts a diagnosis of the elements which must be developed in order to better meet the recommendations of the OECD/Eurostat Manual on the Environment industry (Eurostat Doc. Eco-Ind/98/1). In that context available data are presented on public sector activities and expenditures related to ancillary (in-house) activities of enterprises.
