The 2026 GeoNames Symposium has the theme “The heritage value of microtoponyms” and will take place from 12 to 13 October. Following the 2026 GeoNames Symposium, there will be a joint UNGEGN meeting of the Working Group on Geographical Names as Cultural Heritage and the Working Group on Exonyms, from 14 – 16 October. This joint meeting will include dedicated sessions to discuss the forthcoming proposed decision on Exonyms, which aims to reconcile issues within and between resolutions and decisions of UNGEGN and its predecessor bodies. This joint meeting incorporates the 28th meeting of the Working Group on Exonyms and the 1st in-person meeting of the revitalised Working Group on Geographical Names as Cultural Heritage. The Joint Meeting of the Working Groups invites contributions on the theme ‘Exonyms as Cultural Heritage’. This is to highlight the interaction between Exonyms and Cultural Heritage, as a means of grounding the work of both Working Groups and highlighting the many opportunities that ensue from joint work.
