Professor of Demography, University of Cape Town
Tom Moultrie is professor of demography and director of the Centre for Actuarial Research (CARe) at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Among his long-standing research interests are the political sociology of official statistics; and improving and refining the suite of indirect methods of demographic estimation. From 2010-3, he led the team that produced Tools for Demographic Estimation, an online resource funded by UNFPA that updated and revised the canonical methods of demographic estimation from limited, deficient, and defective data. He has frequently acted as a consultant in the analysis of census data for national governments and international agencies.
He is a member of UNSDSN-TReNDS; and a former Council member of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP). Tom holds a PhD in Demography from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine; an MSc in Development Studies from the London School of Economics and Political Science; and a Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science from the University of Cape Town.
