The Cape Town Action Plan lays out the strategic areas where the data and statistical communities should focus to "quality, accessible, timely and reliable disaggregated data… to help with the measurement of progress and to ensure no one is left behind" as stated in the 2030 Agenda.
September 2018 marks the first 1000 days of the SDGs and the Agenda 2030. The World Data Forum is a unique opportunity to take stock of what is the progress to date. This session will bring the knowledge of researchers from think tanks in different regions of the Global South to discuss what is the observed progress in their countries in relation to the following key issues:
- Disaggregation: What is the progress done to improve the disaggregation of data? What are the types of instruments, innovations or investments put forward by countries to have more granular data?
- Breadth: Multiple assessments show that not all areas have the same availability on data, with areas such as the environment, energy and infrastructure being particularly challenging across countries. What actions have countries put forward to increase the data available on these areas of development? What are the investments done in this area?
- Harnessing existing data: While new data is certainly necessary, maximizing the use of current data, for implementation of programmes and monitoring of the SDGs is important. This could include data from surveys that is not used, administrative records, or data from non-government acts. How have governments made the best use of existing data? Are these cost-effective solutions to improving policy or monitoring?”
