OPEN DATA: CHALLENGES & OPPORTUNITIES
Despite the availability of technology-enabled real time data, it is fair to say that we are yet to realize its full potential. Technology enabled data capturing is underutilized by NSOs and the private sector is collecting and using information in a largely self-regulated space; bringing with it well founded concerns about privacy, data breaches and misuse. In this emerging and complex space, how do we ensure good governance? Is better regulation the answer? How can we assess data quality and veracity? In the new era of fake news, how can we build trust in data and statistics? The State of Open Data is a project that seeks to review the development of the open data movement over the past 10 years. This will be a straightforward assessment of successes or failures that will look back in order to look forward at how best to shape the future of open data around the world.
Main outcome from session:
- A presentation of the State of Open Data Report specificly the opportunities and challenges to NSO’s but also for different regions in the globe.
- A discussion around the GDPR; the responsibility of regulators and the private sector on the responsible use and dissemination of data and information.
