We have all heard the saying ‘What gets measured gets done '. In addressing challenges and opportunities of population ageing, this motto points to the need and urgency of developing a high quality evidence base to understand better experiences of ageing at the individual level and how they can be enriched with better-informed public policy responses, that will ensure that some of the most vulnerable people in society are not left behind.
As the proportion of the world 's population in the older ages continues to grow, the need for improved information and analysis of population ageing becomes increasingly important. The effective implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the pledge ‘Leave No One Behind ' requires timely and reliable data across all age groups for the full range of sustainable development targets.
This session will illustrate the need for better data, present a case study for where better data has impacted policy and highlight opportunities to improve evidence on ageing.
A civil society organisation will share its experience as a data user working with older people in low- and middle-income countries in the context of growing burden of disease, disability and humanitarian emergency. The organisation will present findings from Global AgeWatch Insights project: to what extent marginalised groups of older men and women are ‘visible ' in official statistics, what can be done now and in the longer term to fill some of data gaps .
Representatives from national statistical offices will present lessons from country-level initiatives to improve evidence on ageing for policy making through stronger cooperation with relevant stakeholders, tailor-made analysis and better utilisation of existing datasets.
The session will introduce the Titchfield City Group on Ageing and Age-Disaggregated Data (endorsed at UNSC, March 2018), an international initiative to develop standardized tools and methods for producing statistics on ageing.
