The Cape Town Global Action Plan for Sustainable Development Data, issued on 15 January 2017, recognizes the need to facilitate the application of modern technologies and new data sources to mainstream statistical activities to support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, as well as tracking progress of the SDGs. In particular, it calls for the identification and removal of barriers to the use of new data sources, including registries and administrative data, geospatial information systems, and other innovative data sources. To this end, the Action Plan promotes the integration of modern geospatial information management systems within mainstream statistical production programmes, highlighting synergies between the two systems; and stresses the need to build confidence, trust and capacity through coordinated measures, legal reforms, and better funding, as well as through the development of principles and guidelines, to support the integration of data from traditional and non-traditional data sources.

The Mexico City Declaration, issued at the conclusion of the Fifth High-level Forum on Global Geospatial Information Management on 30th November 2017, commended the United Nations Statistics Division and Esri on its joint research exercise, and endorsed the concept of a federated system of open SDG Data Hubs as a practical means for enabling technologies and capabilities to strengthen the ability of the national and global statistical systems to manage and share data and good practices for the SDGs, to allow countries to strive for better data interoperability and integration, to enhance relationships between national and global data, and to measure, monitor and report on the SDGs in a geographic context. The 2018 UN Statistical Commission welcomed the efforts to establish a federated system of global data hubs.
Six Member states will demonstrate their SDG Data Hubs and how it is supporting countries through a systems of systems approach. It will explore initiatives that allow greater collaboration around the SDGs and through country presentations explain how the Hub concept is working by highlighting member states hubs and the collaborative elements within the technology that allow this to take place.
