The principle of national ownership is at the core of the U.N. 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to help ensure a people-centric approach that addresses national priorities. This requires countries to be chiefly responsible for collecting information and monitoring progress towards achieving economic, social, and environmental sustainability. This session enables the sharing of sound Earth observation (EO) methods, tools, and technologies, as well as national use cases of effective integration of EO and geospatial data products with traditional and other relevant information sources in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), targets, and indicators, and for informed decision-making.
The event will address several questions around the monitoring and delivery of the SDGs, including:
- Where is the data that is needed to advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development?
- What are examples of successful methods adopted by countries for monitoring and reporting on the SDGs, and how can these be scaled up to enable their widespread, sustained use by countries?
- What are examples of existing, and forthcoming, initiatives, tools, and technologies, such as the African Regional Data Cube, aimed to enable greater use of EO and geospatial data for sustainable development?
