Objective:
The main objective of this side event is to provide an interactive platform for showcasing and discussing work and projects towards data-driven cities, presenting innovative tailor-made solutions to understand and measure urban development trajectories and conditions including providing evidence to enable cities make informed decision-making. The side event is conceptualized with two main focus areas:
- Focus 1: Share, discuss and promote the use of various tools and methodologies (e.g. urban observatories, City Prosperity Index, national sample of cities) developed to ensure relevant urban data is available at the local, sub-national and national levels on a timely basis and more frequently, for monitoring and reporting on urban SDGs and NUA. Improved monitoring is expected to support the formulation of better informed urban policies/plans/designs in cities worldwide.
- Focus 2: Present and discuss participatory research methods and citizen mapping techniques used by cities and citizens to visualize and assess neighborhood ecologies and urban ecosystems in ways that facilitate city-to-citizen and city-to city-cooperation, knowledge sharing and engagement leading to solutions that enhance both human habitats and the natural systems they depend upon. We will show how the ecocity approach to data collection, digital curation, and data visualization is and will continue to be a growing driver in sustainable policy, decision-making and urban management from the scale and use of the citizen and neighborhood, to the city, region, and beyond.
Main outcome:
Primary outcome is increased understanding of the various tools and methodological approaches available to enable informed decision making-making at city level through knowledge sharing on how data are being generated and used for smarter, risk-based resource allocation and better service delivery to citizens.
Target audience:
Target audience is urban service providers, national governments, local governments, nonprofit and civil society, United Nations agencies, intergovernmental organizations, city leaders, NSOs, CSOs and other stakeholders.
